Branch Striking Competition
June 5th at Kirk Deighton
On a sunny, but chilly, day – various bands within Leeds Branch gathered for the annual 6 bell striking competition.
In a keenly fought contest, the results were as follows.
Leeds Parish Church 6.5 faults
Burley 8.5 faults
Ossett 11.5 faults
Chapel Allerton 12 faults
Kirk Deighton 15 faults
Knaresborough 16.5 faults
All the bands either rang 240 double or minor – and the standard was very good baring the odd trip, which all bands had to some degree.
Afterwards a very nice Tea was held in the Parish Rooms (conveniently opposite the pub), followed by the AGM (minutes to follow).

Whixley Training Day
On Saturday July 31st at 9:30 am - 1pm some of the Knaresborough and Kirk Deighton ringers went across to Whixley on a training day as helpers to assist the local ringers with developing their ringing of Plain Bob Doubles.
John and Christine Leech, Derrick McRobert, Charlie Brown, Bill Todd, John Burnup and Sue Hucknall attended
The day started with a theory session delivered by John Leech to the local ringers whilst the rest ascended to the tower to ring Bayles Doubles! Interesting ...... (SH)
Most of the morning was spent practicing Plain Bob Doubles, Plain Hunting and Bayles Doubles with the local ringers given guidance and support.
During the morning we took a break for tea and coffee, certainly ready for a break
Then there was some more ringing before the end of the session and lunch time (Ed - and no doubt the pub)

Branch Outing - Glossop & District – 3rd July 2010
A very select group from Leeds set out in 2 cars, very early. In pole position, and taking the scenic route, was John, accompanied by Sue & Pete. Hoping the bells were going to be up (they were – thanks to the advance party), and taking the M62, was Deborah accompanied by Penny, Katharine, Paul & Iona. We were fortunately joined by Neil Bennett, accompanied by Laura Davies & Tom Miles, who had see our plea for additional ringers on Campanophile! We were very lucky to have Laura, Tom, and Rob Hodgetts (for the last tower) – all excellent young ringers (especially at the heavy end!) and names to look out for in the future.
Left to right – Pete, John, Sue, Tom, Katharine, Penny, Laura, Neil, Paul, Deborah & Iona
Some very nice ringing was achieved – and a good time was had by all. The Ring o’ Bells pub in Marple provided an excellent lunch and the Church Inn in Saddleworth provided the tea! The towers are listed in order.

Yorkshire Association Inter-branch Striking Contest
The YACR inter-branch striking contest was held at Penistone on Saturday 9th May prior to the AGM at Wakefield. This contest has not taken place for a long time with a gap of 23 years since the last one. Six branches entered - York branch had also said they would field a team but pulled out half an hour before the competition started. The competition was judged by Gail Cater (western branch member!) who placed the teams as following (given in the order which they rang, number of faults and final position.)
Branch Faults Position
1. Leeds 25 2nd
2. Central 96 5th
3. Western 21 1st
4. Selby 120 6th
5. Sheffield 32 3rd
6. Scarborough 84 4th
The winners were the Western Branch followed very closely by the Leeds Branch band. The test piece was a course of Cambridge major.
The Leeds branch band are pictured standing according to bell rung - back row left to right 5 to 8, Paul Brook, Angus Dodds, Jeff Ladd, Graham Bloom. Front row left to right 4 to 1 are Cath Ladd, John Leech, Wendy Bloom and Kathy Thorley. Conducted by Jeff.
Congratulations to the Leeds Branch band who according to the judge ‘rang consistently well with only a few slight striking errors’

Leeds and District Branch YACR - Quarter Peals
Leeds and District Branch YACR
These quarters were all arranged for the Leeds Branch quarter peal week. The aim of the week was to enable branch members to get together and ring quarters which individual towers/groups might not be able to do by themselves. Special thanks to Jeff Ladd for conducting both the quarter of Stedman Triples which was a first of Stedman for three of the band and the handbell quarter which was quite an achievement being a first in hand for one ringer and first of major in hand for the other two. Other quarters were rung during the week but will be published separately in memory of Kath Day. The quarter of Ariel at Leeds Parish Church came to an abrupt end when the tenor clapper snapped.

Leeds Branch Christmas Party December 12th 2008
Ringing took place at St Michael’s Headingley from 7.00. We were rather short of ringers early on but at least this meant that everyone had to ring and thus kept warm, while later there was competition to get close to the heater! We rang Stedman (doubles and triples) and Cambridge Major as well as rounds and call changes and methods in between so that everyone had a good ring. We then moved on to Katharine’s house in Headingley for soup, mince pies etc and mulled wine. Before everyone had too much of the wine (mulled and otherwise) we split into teams for a quiz based on lists. Some questions were ringing orientated - name the tower closest to the terminus of the roads A1 - A6 (no-one got the end of the A1 correct!) and others not, for example name six British football stadia starting with E (Elland Road is one). A couple of teams had some really competitive members and were very keen to win while another team had a much more laid back approach - they didn’t win! The winners were the team from LPC, Emily Bloom, Graham Bloom, Paul Bennett and Charlotte Davies. The prize, a box of chocolates was appreciated by Emily in particular. We then had a go at ringing carols on handbells with John Leech conducting/encouraging/admonishing until we eventually got it right - see the photos.
A good time was had by all - I got home to a note on the fridge saying phone Iona if you get home before 12.30 - it was only a bit after so I did, to find my student daughter in bed on a Friday night before me and possibly more sober!

What on earth are we supposed to be doing here!

That should have been you then

No it wasn’t me it was you

Well done, success, you played Silent Night or was it Jingle Bells?

Assisting Towers to Practice Methods
As part of the ringing program planned for 2008 we plan to visit some towers in the branch on their practice night. This is specifically aimed at assisting towers to practice methods which they may not always be able to ring due to a lack of experienced ringers. If you would like branch members to attend and ring a specific method/methods please contact me and we can arrange a suitable date.

Leeds Branch Christmas social
Leeds Branch Christmas Social
Saturday December 15th St Wilfrid’s Harrogate
This event started with ringing on the light 8 at St Wilfrid’s - initially with the simulator while a service was taking place then with the bells open. As the simulator was programmed with a recording of St Wilfrid’s bells there was little difference inside the tower.
After everyone had enjoyed a good ring we moved to the small hall where Andrew had a quiz for us to do while he and his group of helpers were putting the finishing touches to the meal. This was to identify 20 churches with 1,2 or 3 bells within the branch. There were a few clues to help and a couple of the churches were easily recognisable but for most of us the rest was guess work.
We then enjoyed a really lovely meal of cassoulet served with French bread followed by Normandy apple tart. This really was delicious - well done to Andrew and his Bettys’ cooking course. After a short break to finish the quiz (or just to guess all the answers) the results were announced. The winning team of Deborah and Eilis managed to get all 20 correct and assured me they did make a few educated guesses but even so, seriously anoracky.
We then moved on to another quiz in the main hall. For this teams of 2 ran round the hall checking off the correct letter sequences from posters stuck around the room. The winners enjoyed a chocolate prize as did the winners of the tower quiz.

The letter sequence quiz- not surprisingly this team did not win!
Next up was a version of musical chairs - see the photos to work out how it is played. Great fun and not taken too seriously by most members although Andrew was determined to ensure he won!

Andrew then organised some tune ringing on handbells which rounded off a very enjoyable evening.

What Other Courses Do You Want?
What Other Courses Do You Want From
The Education Committee In 2008?
The Committee will lay-on whatever Courses you want - and will help Branches run their own Courses if they like.
To find out what to run, we are asking members simply to let us know!
Please contact me to say which of the following you would like to see run. When there’s enough interest we’ll run it!
•A Course on Raising and lowering in peal, including how to lead.
•A combined MTM Course (Maintenance, Teaching & Management of a tower)
•A Course on ‘Teaching the Teachers’ how to teach.
•A Course on the ‘internal’ management of towers.
•A Course on Conducting and/or Bob Calling.
•A Course on ‘How to Teach a Band from Scratch’, with very little help.
•A Course on Ringing Theory.
•A Course on ringing on higher numbers of bells for those appropriately experienced .
•A ‘Stedman Day’ - Triples to Cinques: theory and practicals (hopefully Spring 2008).
•Any other topic?
The offer is always open, but so the Committee can do its planning, please let me know as soon as you can. Please note that we’d like to run the Stedman practical Course in the Spring, so need to know ‘takers’ soon.

Branch Quarter peal 'week'
The branch has held a 'novices' striking contest for the past few years. Our novices have now progressed so this year we decided instead of a contest to ring quarter peals so that some of these ringers could ring their first quarter. All towers in the branch were encouraged to ring a quarter with a 'first' in it and the following quarters were rung. Several quarters were also attempted but not successfully completed- which is likely when striving for new methods but still useful experience. Congratulations to everyone who took part, particularly those ringing their first quarter - hopefully the first of many.
